One Volume Commentary
The New Interpreter's One Volume Commentary will replace the Interpreter's
One Volume Commentary, which has remained in print since 1971 and was purchased
by several hundred thousand customers. More than 60 contributors are involved in
the complete revision of this popular resource among pastors and lay teachers or
students of the Scriptures.
Meet the General Editors
David L. Petersen, is the General Editor of the forthcoming volume. He is Professor
of Old Testament at Candler School of Theology, Emory University. During 2004, David
Petersen served as president of the Society of Biblical Literature. An ordained
Presbyterian minister, Dr. Petersen has written, coauthored, or coedited a number
of scholarly and popular books and articles. He was senior Old Testament editor
for The New Interpreter's Bible, and he is writing the 25,000 word article
on Prophets for the New Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible. He earned
the PhD, MPhil, and BD at Yale University, and the BA at the College of Wooster.
His publications include:
Beverly Gaventa, Helen H.P. Manson Processor of New Testament Literature and Exegesis
at Princeton Theological Seminary, earned the B.A. from Phillips University, the
M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in New York, and the Ph.D. from Duke University.
She also holds the Doctor of Divinity
degree honoris causa from Kalamazoo
College and from Christian Theological Seminary. Prior to coming to Princeton, she
taught at Colgate Rochester Divinity School and at Columbia Theological Seminary.
In addition to numerous articles and reviews, Dr. Gaventa has written

the New
Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible, vol 1 (Abingdon, 2006); I and II

Aspects of Conversion in the New Testament (Fortress, 1986). She has also edited
several volumes, the most recent of which is

Mark and the Ends of God (co-edited with Patrick Miller; Westminster, 2005).
With Cynthia Rigby, she edited
Blessed one:
Protestant Perspectives on Mary (Westminster, 2002), and with Robert Fortna,
she edited The Conversation Continues: Studies in Paul and John in honor of J.
Louis Martyn (Abingdon, 1990). Dr. Gaventa currently serves on the editorial
councils for New Testament Studies and the Catholic Biblical quarterly
, and is an editor-at-large for Christian Century.
Dr. Gaventa is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, where she has served in
a variety of leadership roles. She is also a member of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti
Societas, the American Theological Society, the Catholic Biblical Association, and the
Center of Theological Inquiry. Her current project is a commentary on Paul's letter
to the Romans.
